Name:dedicated to invisible countries
Location:Portland, Oregon, United States
Birthdate:1972-09-10
Bio:Long-time Pacific Northwest resident, by way of Issaquah, Washington (which you’ve probably never heard of unless you’re a Modest Mouse fan) and Seattle (which way too many people have heard of at this point.) Although if you notice my blonde roots showing, I’ll have to admit that I was born in San Jose, California. Currently I live in Portland, Oregon, in my grandmother’s house, which my husband and I recently bought.

I’m a freelance writer and editor, and before you get all wide-eyed about that, I have to disappoint you with the fact that most of my work is in the technical field. When it comes to real writing, it’s devoted to local publications in a non-fiction format. I’ve yet to be published in a national magazine or newspaper. However, I don’t (read: try not to) get down about that. The three years I spent working in a music museum studying the lives—-both great and small—-of those in the music industry made me realize that fame is often not as much about talent as it is about persistence and luck. (And marketing. And timing.) So, I just keep plugging away until the time that the wheel of fortune does (or doesn’t) decide to notice me, since there really isn't another profession I'm drawn to. The book Secret Lives of Birthdays ascribed the Wheel of Fortune tarot card to my birthday, and if past experiences are any indication, chances are that I’ll see some pretty intense highs and lows before all is said and done. Bring it on!

I indulge numerous interests to keep me happy, which include biking long distances, singing in my UU church choir, dinking away on my guitar and violin, tasting wine, watching my two dogs chase each other, and nurturing my yard into remembering what it can do. (The Secret Garden was, and I guess still is, one of my all-time favorite stories.)

As you've noticed, most of my posts aren't friends-only since I don't tend to post a whole lot of intense, soul-baring stuff here. (That stuff I *do* flag as friends-only.) And I'm pretty open about having various folks add me to their friends list, but please use your common sense about the "ass factor" of your comment before you post it. Questioning, challenging, even criticizing is fair game. Attacking me or other posters...that doesn't pass muster with my inner Emily Post and will mean me taking this LJ into hiding. Thanks!

(And I hate to disappoint those of you looking for a sword-swallowing tattoo artist, but this is not me. Sorry!)

My Unitarian Jihad Name is: Sister Hand Grenade of Patience.

I pretended to work like others from morning to evening,
but I was absent, dedicated to invisible countries.
-- Czeslaw Milosz (from "Nonadaptation")

Don't ask yourself what the world needs; ask yourself what makes you come alive. And then go and do that. Because what the world needs are people who have come alive.
--Howard Thurman

All the knowledge I possess everyone else can acquire,
but my heart is exclusively my own.
--Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

No great thing is created suddenly.
--Epicetus

The Bible's blind, the Torah's deaf, the Qu'ran's mute
If you burn them all together you get close to the truth
-- Bright Eyes (from "Four Winds")

My father once told me that artists use lies to show the truth, while politicians use lies to cover it.
--Evey Hammond (from "V for Vendetta")

And to those of you who mourn your lives through one day to the next
Well let them take you next!
Can’t you live and be thankful you’re here?
See - it could be you, tomorrow, next year.
--Guillemots (from "Trains to Brazil")

To live is so startling it leaves little time for anything else.
-- Emily Dickinson

One day I felt so good nothing could bring me down
Next morning I awoke I was plastered to the ground
Whistle your favorite tune when it's all said and done
If your maker don't approve at least you know you've had your fun
--Langhorne Slim (from "Restless")

This is how it works
You're young until you're not
You love until you don't
You try until you can't
You laugh until you cry
You cry until you laugh
And everyone must breathe
Until their dying breath

No, this is how it works
You peer inside yourself
You take the things you like
And try to love the things you took
And then you take that love you made
And stick it into some
Someone else's heart
Pumping someone else's blood
And walking arm in arm
You hope it don't get harmed
But even if it does
You'll just do it all again
--Regina Spektor (from "On the Radio")
